Abstract:

Overall we know that as a human race we have destroyed our environment on so many different levels which has culminated in the current climate crisis.

All my life I have been passionate about ecosystems and especially devastated to learn that my mother’s home within the Amazon Rainforest continues to be destroyed by deforestation and poor agricultural practices. It is so frustrating to see so many developing countries dealing with these issues. Paraguay, where I
served as a Peace Corps Volunteer, also dealt with issues of deforestation and ecosystem degradation. We experience all these issues as PCVs but we can only do so much.

As RPCVs we can address issues in our home towns. Climate change and Deforestation is a huge global issue, but how can we bring solutions that can make the most impact? This comes down to ecosystem restoration.

Why do I care about this? I just completed a second master’s degree where I worked in Wetland Restoration. Scientifically we have many challenges in finding ways to create/restore wetlands, but we also have challenges in community involvement. One of my fellow graduate students found that if the community is involved, the restoration project was the most successful. Restoration is not simply letting nature do its thing.

For my presentation, I will discuss my research in wetland restoration and  provide simple solutions for everyone to make an impact locally to preserve and restore our ecosystems. These small steps by the many will make an impact that we will not see immediately but will reverberate into the future to create a
better environment for all.
